Salem Road and Route 162 in Georgia from I-20 to Brown Bridge Road travels through Rockdale County Ga and Newton County Georgia. The Salem Road Corridor Overlay, or SRCO was created by Rockdale County to maintain and improve aesthetics along the corridor. New zoning concepts for Rockdale County such as mixed use commercial and residential with setasides for parks and recreation were created for use with the Salem Road Overlay.
One aesthetic point was the glaring and ugly growth of Hwy 138 / Ga 20 with unlimited signage in terms of heighth and square footage. The Salem Road Overlay addressed these issues with a uniform guideline that mandates lower signs and incorporates architectural standards into the signage construction criteria.
Salem Road Corridor Association participated in the community driven process of planning for widening of Rt 162 with the county and state planners and the lead engineering firm.
