Conyers Rejects Taxation

Wednesday evening May 11, 2011 Mayor Mills and the City Council approved a resolution opposing a 1 cent sales tax increase being pushed on counties by MARTA. Public transportation advocates in favor of MARTA claim its adoption lowers pollution, congestion and helps the poor, elderly and handicapped. Those opposed cite the economic disadvantage to Rockdale County and the spread of crime that comes with public transportation.

Approval of the resolution was unanimous. Officials have been reported to say they would not support MARTA in or near the City of Conyers. Some citizens have commented on crime and the recent beating of airline employees on MARTA.
